Author Guidelines

Preparing the manuscript, authors are kindly requested to adhere to the following regulations based on the “Uniform Requirements for Manuscripts Submitted to Biomedical Journals”, developed by the International Committee of Medical Journal Editors.

The Journal’s Editorial Board hopes that strict observance of these Requirements by manuscript authors helps to significantly improve the Journal’s quality and citing by researchers.

I. Manuscript requirements

We accept submissions strictly online, via the form available at our website. Please upload your manuscript as a Microsoft Office Word document (*.doc, *.docx and *.rtf formats).

Authors should create the manuscripts using the templates of the certain formats. Please, download Word templates below:

We strongly recommend the authors to use the TEMPLATE file for the appropriate type of manuscript (see above) and follow the recommendations set out in the file. Please note that the editorial templates for manuscripts are not perfect for whole variety of research types and study designs. We recommend authors to follow the international guidelines for transparent and accurate reporting data in scholarly articles collected on the EQUATOR Network platform. Reporting guidelines for the main study types:

The editorial templates do not contradict the international guidelines for a manuscript preparation, however, if difficulties arise, the authors should be more guided by international reporting guidelines.

Length of the manuscript from an original study, lecture or systematic review (including tables and list of references) should not exceed 6000 words. Case reports should be limited to 4000 words, short reports and letters to the editor should not exceed 1500 words. Please consult the MS Word built-in statistics service prior to submission in order to find out the exact length of your manuscript. Should your manuscript exceed the aforementioned limits, the editorial board will carry out the final decision on its publication based on recommendations from your reviewer.

Text formatting. Lettering in Times New Roman is preferable in all cases (font size 12 pt with 1.0 line spacing and 2 cm margins). Kindly refrain from using underlining in your document (italic and bold formatting is acceptable).

File structure. The journal editorial board prefers to receive a manuscript as a single complete file with all figures, tables and any additional supplemental materials. Please organize your text according to the following template:

  • Article title. Best article titles bear short, clear and distinctive messages.
  • Authors and their affiliated institutions, linked by superscript numbers, should be listed beneath the title on the opening page of the manuscript.
  • Abstract of an original study should start with some brief background information and statement of the study’s AIMS, followed by MATERIALS & METHODS and finishing with the RESULTS. The closing sentence should outline the main CONCLUSIONS of the study in the most comprehensible terms. Please note that your abstract should be 300 words or less.
  • Choice of keywords. MeSH (Medical Subject Headings) thesaurus is a preferred source for choosing keywords.
  • The body of the text should start with a brief introduction, describing the paper’s significance. In the case of an original study, the body of the paper should follow a common structured approach to the description of the studies aim, its materials, methods and results, as well as Discussion and Conclusions sections.
  • Additional info section should comprise the following:
    • Clarification regarding any potential or actual conflicts of interest of the authors. Any affiliations, financial relations, financial or political interests in the manuscript as a whole or in part, including employment and other liabilities that may result in withholding or deliberate corruption of data or adversely influenced interpretation, are considered a conflict of interest and must be explicitly stated as such. Please note that conflicts of interest do not impede a publication, though failure to disclose one does.
    • A brief list of funding sources for the results reported in the paper, as well as the publication process itself (e.g. a commercial organization, a foundation or government grant, etc.).
    • A description the roles or responsibilities of the authors. You may also place here an acknowledgment for any individuals or organizations that assisted in your work.
II. Special guidelines for original research articles preparation

Introduction. In this section, a research background should be clearly formulated: a problem essence and its significance should be specified. Authors should introduce a studied problem to readers, to describe in brief what is known in this field, to mention works of other authors, to specify drawbacks of previous studies if there are any, in other words, to reason the necessity of their study. One shouldn’t list all published works on the topic, it is enough to mention the most significant works directly relating to the topic. It is recommended to make references not only to national, but also to foreign research in the studied topic.

At the end of this section, state a study aim or a hypothesis tested by authors. The aim should be formulated in such a way that readers have a complete grasp of what is planned to study, persons that are going to be studied and methods.

Methods. The section should include only those methods which were supposed to be used at a project planning stage according to an original study protocol. If in the process of a study implementation, a need in additional methods appears, they should be presented in the section “Discussion”. The section should be very detailed, so that readers could independently assess methodological benefits and implications of a study as well as reduplicate it if desired.

In this section, it is recommended to present clear descriptions of the following aspects (it is not necessary to separate them into subsections): a study type; methods of selection of study participants; methods of measurements; methods of data presentation and processing; ethical principles.

  1. Study design. In this subsection, a type of an implemented study is clearly specified (a literature review, observational, experimental etc.). In implementation of an observational study, it should be indicated, if the study is descriptive or analytical. In analytical studies, a kind of a study is determined: cross-sectional (one stage study), case-control, cohort, environmental (correlation) etc. It is recommended to specify a year and a month of a study implementation, particularly if symptoms with seasonal variation were studied. In literature reviews, criteria of their publication selection should be clearly indicated.
  1. Study objects selection. In this subsection, it is clearly specified how patients or laboratory animals were selected for observations or experiments. Criteria for inclusion of potential participants in a study and exclusion from it are specified. It is recommended to indicate the total formation for participant selection, what is also used for result extrapolation. If the parameter “race” or “ethnicity” was used in a study, it should be explained how the parameter was assessed and why it was important to use it. For observational studies, one should specify methods of sample creation (simple random, stratified, systematic, cluster, multistage etc.) and to ground inclusion of that exact number of participants in a study. For experimental studies, it is necessary to indicate presence or absence of study participants’ randomization. A randomization procedure description should be presented. Besides, one should indicate, if a masking procedure was carried out. Calculations of sampling minimum necessary size for check of statistical hypotheses or retrospective calculation of statistical power for main calculations are welcome.
  1. Measurement technique. All procedures of parameter measurements, data collection, medical or diagnostic interventions should be described in detail, so that it is possible to reduplicate a study according to a presented description. If necessary, it is possible to make a reference to a detailed description of used methods. If a researcher uses his/her own variant of an earlier described method or proposes a new method, it is necessary to present a brief description of the used variant or the proposed method, as well as any reasons against use of generally accepted methods. Titles of medicinal agents (both trade and international), chemical substances, doses and ways of administration of preparations applied in a study should be specified. Used devices, instruments, medicinal preparations etc. should be accompanied by references to manufacturers.
  1. Methods of data presentation and processing. It is necessary to describe used methods of data processing so thoroughly that readers having access to basic data can check results. In cases of doubt, the Editorial Body can request basic data from article authors in order to check presented results. In this subsection, definitions to all statistical terms, symbols and abbreviations used in an article should be given. For example, М — arithmetical mean, SD — standard deviation, m — standard error of arithmetical mean, Mе — median, Mo — mode, etc. If statistical hypotheses were checked in a study, one should specify the significance critical level (р) accepted by authors. Hypotheses must be stated clearly and described in popular language.
The Journal Editorial Board does not recommend to rely only on use of the reached level of significance during check of statistical hypotheses, as the value р does not indicate complete information. It is recommended to present results with corresponding errors and uncertainty parameters (confidence intervals). In description of statistical methods, references to manuals and guides should be given with obligatory page indications. Besides statistical procedures for check of hypotheses, it is recommended to calculate the effect value for most significant comparisons.
If several statistical criteria were used in a study, one should mention all of them and indicate which of criteria and in what situations were used. Application of one or other methods of data processing should be clearly reasoned. For example, if parametric criteria were used, one should describe what criteria were used for distribution check. It is necessary to specify how observation of conditions necessary for use of methods was checked. Each of used criteria should be specified so that to exclude different interpretations. For example, if sample means were compared with help of a Student's criterion, one should indicate which of the Student's criteria (for independent samples or for paired observations) was used in the study. It is not enough to say that a correlation analysis was used, it is necessary to indicate which of the correlation coefficients was calculated. In use of the multidimensional methods for data processing, it is specified, what was a method of selection of variables for inclusion into models and what categories were used as comparison categories. If a rare method of data processing was used, it is necessary to indicate, why exactly that method has been chosen, to make a reference to a literary source and to describe in brief the used method.
If a package of statistical programs was used for data processing, one should indicate its name and version. It is not necessary to inform, what computer was used for data processing since such information does not have practical value.
  1. Ethical principles. If an article contains a description of manned experiments, it is necessary to indicate if the procedure corresponded to the standards of the Ethical Committee responsible for this aspect of the work or to the Helsinki Declaration of 1975 and its revision of 1983. One shouldn’t call surnames and initials of patients, numbers of case histories, particularly if an article is accompanied by illustrations or photos. If laboratory animals were used in a study, it is necessary to specify animals’ species and number, used methods of anesthesia and sacrifice according to the “Rules of Work with Experimental Animals” approved by the USSR Ministry of Health or rules adopted in authors’ institutions, the recommendations of the National Research Council or the applicable law.

Results. The section is destined only for presentation of main research results. Results received during a study are not compared with results of analogous studies of other authors and are not discussed.

Results should be presented in a text, tables and figures in natural sequence on the basis of priority of study tasks and goals. It is not recommended to duplicate in a text results presented in tables or in figures and vice versa. Only significant observations relating to  study tasks are described, separated and summarized. General characteristics of samples or studied groups should be presented in a table with indication of main studied symptoms. It is necessary to specify not only average values, but also measures of dispersion or confidence intervals for means and fractions.

Mean values should not be more exact than by one decimal sign in comparison with basic data. In descriptions of fractions, it is necessary to specify absolute numbers of observations, particularly in small samples. Percent is stated with two decimal signs only if a fraction is less than 1 %. If a fraction is 1-10 %, one decimal sign is enough. Use of 95 % confidence intervals is welcome both for mean values and fractions.

The reached level of significance for each of used statistical criteria should be given within the accuracy of three decimal signs. The Editorial Body highly recommends to avoid formulas like р < 0.05 (exception is in cases when p <0.001). Instead of the formulas p >0.05 or “differences are insignificant” one should specify the absolute value р within the accuracy of thousandths (e.g., р=0.032). Besides the reached level of significance, it is recommended to give actual criteria values and a number of degrees of freedom. For example, the Pearson’s chi-square criterion represents the following in presence of two numbers of freedom: χ2=29.2, d.f.=2, р <0.001. It is not correct to indicate that “the differences between the average values are reliable (unreliable)”, it is more correct to say about  statistically significant (or insignificant) differences.

It should be always noted that detection of statistically significant differences does not mean that reliable or clinically significant differences as well as cause-effect relations are present.

Discussion. In articles describing original studies, this section begins with a brief (not more than 2–3 sentences) presentation of a study main results. Results corresponding to study goals and tasks are considered as main results. There is no point in drawing attention to side results, only because statistically significant differences have been detected during statistical hypotheses checking. Materials described in sections “Introduction” and “Methods” are not to be repeated in this section. It is necessary to specify new and important aspects of a study and, just as important, to explain reasons for obtaining these particular results. One should describe available shortcomings of a study, especially if they can influence significantly obtained results or their interpretation. Besides, one should note study strengths or its advantages over other studies in the field. Discussion of virtues and shortcomings of a study is an important part of the section and is qualified to help readers to interpret obtained results. It is always necessary to remember, that it is better to draw attention of readers to available shortcomings (there is no such thing as a perfect study), than to get a situation when these shortcomings are noted by reviewers or readers. In the section, it should be described, how obtained results correlate with results of similar studies conducted by other authors. Instead of bare mention of previous studies, one should try to explain why obtained results differ or do not differ from results of other authors. Possibilities of application of obtained results should be discussed as well as limitations of their application if any. It needs to determine directions of further studies resulting logically from study results. It is possible to formulate new hypotheses, only if it is justified, and one should clearly specify that these are only hypotheses. Sometimes in this section, operational recommendations for use of study results in practice can be presented.

Conclusions should proceed from study goals avoiding unfounded statements and conclusions which are not based on presented observations or calculations. For example, there is no point in making conclusions about economic expediency of application of a new method of treatment of patients with a disease Х, if in an article, comparative economic effectiveness is not analyzed. It is not worth to state priorities referring to incomplete work.

III. List of references

References should be organized according to the guidelines by U.S. National Information Standards Organization NISO Z39.29-2005 [R2010]) in AMA slyle (Journal of American Medical Association style, http://www.amamanualofstyle.com). For detailed instructions on bibliographic formatting, see «References list guidelines». The following are the principle points you should be aware of while preparing your manuscript for submission:

  • References should be numbered in the order in which they are cited.
  • Number of references is limited to 60 for literature reviews, and to 20 for original studies and lectures.
  • Within the body of the text references should be provided in Arabic numerals enclosed in square brackets.
  • A complete list of all authors should be presented in every bibliographical entry. Please put an “et al.” notation after the third name if cited paper has more than 4 authors. Do not shorten titles of your citations. Shortened journal titles should correspond to the MedLine catalogue. If the journal is not indexed by MedLine, please provide its full title.
IV. Tables

Enumerate your tables, give those a heading and clearly marked columns that would be easy to read and comprehend. Please make sure that table data is in line with the numbers in the body of the text (but does not simply duplicate them).

V. Graphical material

Amount of figures should be minimum (unless the nature of your study dictates otherwise). Photographs should be rich in contrast, illustrative artwork should be clear and of high resolution (dpi).

  • If you wish to include in your paper any graphical material created other than by means of standard office applications (e.g. results of diagnostic imaging, photographs, screenshots, digital artwork, etc.), please submit them as separate files via our web form in *.jpeg, *.bmp or *.gif formats. The absolute minimum for acceptable resolution is 300 dpi, though higher is preferable. Do keep in mind that image files should be tagged with numbers corresponding to the enumeration within the manuscript. In addition, file description should provide the caption of your image as it would appear in the paper
(exp.: “Fig. 1. Elliott Proctor Joslin, M.D. (1869-1962).”).
  • Graphs should be labeled on the ordinate and abscissa with the parameter or variable being measured, the units of measure, and the scale.
  • Units should be metric and follow SI convention.
  • Kindly take care to provide references to all of your supplementary materials (tables, graphs, etc.) within the body of the text.
VI. Ethics statement

In accordance with COPE (Committee on Publication Ethics) guidance authors must provide an ethics statement if the study made use of human or vertebrate animal subjects and/or tissue. Approval from the relevant body is required for studies involving:

  • humans (live or tissue), including studies that are observational, survey-based, or include any personal data;
  • animals (live or tissue), including observational studies;
  • non-commercial cell lines.
VII. Cover letter

The journal editorial board requires authors to submit a scanned copy of a cover letter from authors team in *.pdf format. We expect a cover letter to summarize concisely why your paper is a valuable addition to the scientific literature and briefly relate your study to previously published work. Cover letter should be signed by all of your co-authors. We accept separate letters from authors if they have different affiliations declared in the manuscript.

Submission Preparation Checklist

As part of the submission process, authors are required to check off their submission's compliance with each of the following items, and submissions that do not adhere to these guidelines may be returned to the authors.

  • Absence of plagiarism. The submission has not been previously published, nor is it before another journal for consideration (or an explanation has been provided in Comments to the Editor).

  • Correct manuscript format. Manuscript file format is Microsoft Word (has the extension *.doc, *.docx, *.rtf). The text adheres to the stylistic and bibliographic requirements outlined in the Author Guidelines, which is found in "For Authors" section.

  • Cover letter. All the required supporting documents will be submitted together with the manuscript. Authors guarantee to upload scanned original of the filled cover letter in PDF. A cover letter signed by all authors.

Fast-Track Review and Publish:

Price: 1200.00 (USD)

OPTIONAL PAYMENT

(this will NOT abrogate the Peer-Review decesion-based article selection)

The Fast-Track is a review process and editorial workflow to authors seeking a very fast editorial decision and rapid publication at a higher submission fee to compensate the extreme fast referees and editorial work.

For the Fast-Track users:

  • the guaranteed response time (report and decision letter) is 21 days, starting the count from the first business day on which valid payment information has been received from the submitting author;
  • the guaranteed issue for publication (in case of manuscript acceptance) is a nearest upcoming issue of the journal.

If you choose “Fast-Track” for your manuscript the submission fee is USD $1100.

Please note, that the “Fast-Track” option does not guarantee a positive review and acceptance of a manuscript itself. It's only brings an extreme fast time scedule for manuscript processing thrue all editorial procedires. Thus, if the manuscript receives negative reviews, and if the editorial board will take the side of reviewers, the manuscript will be rejected. If the reviewers recomend revisions of the manuscript, the final decision on publication will be only after revised manuscript submission and the second round of review.

The Fast-Track option does not exclude the necessary for correct manuscript formatting. Please ensure that the manuscript corresponds to the formatting guidelines for this journal (you can find them on Author Guidelines page).

To activate the Fast-Track option, the submitting author should make payment from his/her personal account on the journal's website after submitting an article. After making the payment and sending the notification to the editor, the authors will receive confirmation by email and within the next 21 days — the results of the article reviewing and the editorial decision.

In opposite to the Fast-Track option authors can use the standart protocol for manuscript selection in our journal (review and editorial workflow). The standart time for review and editorial workflow are described in detail on the Peer-Review page. You can also find the statistic info about the editorial workflow on the STAT page.

ATTENTION! The Fast-Track Review and Publish payment does not guarantee the publication of a manuscript in the academic journal "Russian journal of Allergy"! The fee is not refundable in the case of refusal to publish after reviewing or failure to review the paper for publication by objective reasons (failure to comply with the authors of author's copyright provisions; negative reviews; author(s) failure to meet a deadline for manuscript corrections; refusal to adopt/correct/update the manuscript in accordance with the requirements of the editorial board; violation of publication ethics guidelines).

Optional Open Access:

Price: 1500.00 (USD)

OPTIONAL PAYMENT

(this will NOT abrogate the Peer-Review decesion-based article selection)

Through optional Immediate Open Access, authors of accepted papers are given the option of paying an open access publication charge to make their paper freely available online immediately via the journal website, meaning that readers will not need a journal subscription to view open access content. If an author does not choose to pay the open access publication charge, their paper will be published in the normal manner, and will not be made freely available online immediately.

Therefore there will be a mixture of non-open access and open access papers within each journal issue. Open access articles will be clearly indicated on the journal's online contents page. In order to view the non-open access content, a current subscription to the journal will be required. Online, print and combined subscription options will continue to be available to institutions.

Waiver Policy

Optional payments are not applicable for any Waiver Policy, as authors without the funds to publish open access in Russian journal of Allergy can publish via the subscription route.
