Number of HIV infected individuals in the world are about 40 millions and continue rising. Fight against HIV/AIDS is one of United Nations’ «Millenium Goals». Efforts of many research institutions and unprecedented financial resources are mobilized for counteraction of the disease. Despite intensive investigations there are no radical treatment or effective preventive vaccine, which is able to protect vulnerable populations from HIV infection. The key steps of HIV/AIDS investigations, development of drugs and strategies of prevention and treatment of the disease, and also perspectives of epidemic control are reviewed.</p></abstract><trans-abstract xml:lang="ru"><p>Одной из важнейших проблем современного здравоохранения является ВИЧ-инфекция/СПИД. Количество ВИЧ-инфицированных в мире составляет около 40 млн человек, и это число продолжает расти. Борьба с распространением ВИЧ-инфекции/СПИДа обозначена ООН как одна из основных целей развития тысячелетия. На противодействие этому заболеванию направлены усилия многочисленных научных коллективов и мобилизованы значительные финансовые ресурсы. Несмотря на интенсивные исследования, ни радикальных средств лечения заболевания, ни эффективной вакцины, которая защищала бы уязвимые популяции от ВИЧ-инфекции, в мире пока не существует.
